Los Alamos, New Mexico is one of the best kept secrets of the Rocky Mountain states. It has all the desirable amenities of a small and medium town, without the crowds, pollution, traffic and parking problems of a big city. In addition, it is just 36 miles from Santa Fe, a major hub of Rocky Mountain art, culture and culinary delights. We love it, but why take our word for it? According to an article in American City Business Journals, June 27, 2005 by G. Scott Thomas, Los Alamos County, N.M tops the list (we're number one!) of small and medium-sized havens that offer a less expensive, more relaxed alternative. It states that "Los Alamos also is No. 1 in separate quality-of-life rankings confined to the Interior West, a seven-state section that sprawls from Canada to Mexico." According to their web page, "Affluence plays a role in the rankings, which reward counties whose residents have large incomes, big homes and college degrees. But high scores are also given for qualities not directly related to earning power, such as racial diversity, short commuting times and the availability of affordable housing."

Another top-notch rating comes from the Colorado College "State of the Rockies" project. In its 2004 report, Los Alamos is among the top 5 healthiest counties, top 5 "most educated places", top 5 "Best Places for Art and Culture in the Rockies", top 3 "Best Places for Kids in the Rockies", and gets an overall A+ "Final Grade"!

In its 2005 report, Los Alamos was ranked top of the "Non-Metro Creative Counties" in the Rockies, Top micropolitan area for "Civic Engagement", and top for "Overall Social Capital". In 2006 Los Alamos gets a grade of A for "Nurturing the Youth".
