Los Alamos Weather

Statistics don't do justice to the great weather we enjoy in Los Alamos. Sunshine is prevalent all year round. The dryness of the air at this altitude (around 7,500 feet) and the location west of the Rockies cause a year-round low humidity climate. So when it rains (there are summer "monsoon" rains, usually between 1 PM and 5 PM), the rain showers are short, and the rain evaporates rapidly. This cools the temperature, and returns the air very quickly to low humidity. In addition, nightime temperatures in summer are around 20 degrees (F) lower than daytime temperatures, so that one can open doors and windows, and cool the home down. No air conditioner is needed - they are very rare in Los Alamos. Even when the temperature rises above 80, the low humidity imparts a comfortable feeling. Relative humidity in June averages 39%, and in December - 56%, averaging 51% over the entire year.

Fall is a beautiful time in Los Alamos. Temperatures are still moderate, the trees have spectacular fall colors, and the scent of pinon wood burning in fireplaces begins to be noticeable.

Although winters are cold, the lack of wind and humidity keep them pleasant, and the ubiquitous sunshine warms the environment during the day. Some winters we get snow, and that makes skiers very happy (Pajarito Mountain is our local ski area). Roads around the townsite are plowed quickly and efficiently, and people can be hired to remove the snow from your driveway, should you so desire. The day after the snow, the sun comes out again, and quickly melts snow on any exposed surfaces.

Spring time is characterized by a lot of sunshine, warming temperatures, and some gusty winds. Trees bloom, flowers appear, and we know that summer is close by!
