Los Alamos Schools


There are 5 elementary schools in Los Alamos. Three in the Los Alamos townsite (Aspen, Barranca, Mountain) and two in White Rock (Chamisa and Pinon). There is one middle school, and one high school, both in Los Alamos.

The Los Alamos High School


Los Alamos schools are among the best. Some of the school system accomplishments are

  • Newsweek (2007) named LAHS as one of the 1,000 best high schools in the U.S.A.

  • The New Mexico Teacher of the Year in 2005 was a social studies teacher from the Los Alamos High School (LAHS).

  • The national 2004 Milken Educator Award was presented to a Los Alamos elementary teacher.

  • In 2004 and 2005, LAHS had several National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, and one semifinalist in the 2005 Presidential Scholars competition.

  • The schools organize an annual science fair, "to provide a quality science fair by helping participants to develop projects and communicate their understanding of the scientific method and/or engineering principles".

  • The Los Alamos Schools Maintenance Department won the New Mexico 2006 Ben Lujan Maintenance Achievement Award on the basis of their use and proficiency with the Facility Information Management System (FIMS)

  • The Los Alamos Middle School Concert Band was awarded the first-place trophy at the State Concert Band Festival.

  • There are special services provided for children with exceptional needs, such as vision or hearing impairment, autism, and other learning disabilities

The LAHS is home to the Duane Smith Auditorium, where many public shows, concerts and plays are performed. In addition, several Los Alamos Concert Association performances are scheduled as we write this page.
