Safety and security in Los Alamos

Los Alamos is a community with a low crime rate where police are afforded the opportunity to become involved with many issues and activities that would be considered non-traditional police roles. Indeed, the crime rate is low. The chances of having a violent encounter with a stranger are exceedingly small. People here feel secure, and doors are often left unlocked. The main task of the police force here seems to be stopping traffic violators (mainly speeders), manning DWI checkpoints (that often don't net any drunk drivers), dealing with domestic disputes (unfortunately, they happen even in paradise...), and investigating occasional vandalism. The "Police Beat" in the local newspaper presents some samples of local issues.

Bottom line: if you come here, you will feel manifestly safe!
