Higher Education
The University of New Mexico (UNM) maintains a branch Los Alamos campus. UNM_LA is known for its small class sizes, hands-on learning, all with a bargain community college price. Many local residents use it to complete their first two years towards their degree, prior to transfer to a four-year college. More information is available at their web site.
Other education opportunities in close proximity are available at the Northern New Mexico College in Española, about 30 minutes away from Los Alamos. It offers degrees in business administration, teacher education, nursing, radiography, biology, and engineering. A new $1.8 million High Tech Manufacturing Training Facility is helping the campus evolve into a strong technological center.
There are additional opportunities for higher learning in Santa Fe. The College of Santa Fe, with about 1,900 students, was founded in 1859 as a Catholic teaching order devoted to excellence in teaching, service to the community, a holistic approach to learning, and respectful, collegial relationships. St. John's College is a four year liberal arts college known for its distinctive “great books” curriculum: There are no majors and no departments; all students follow the same program! The course involves reading, study, and discussion of the most important books of the Western tradition.
